Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The national police force is to conduct an internal drive to stamp out the practice of imposing illegal levies on the public in the streets and in police offices, its new chief said.
"Resolute action will be taken against officers who make members of the public pay illegal levies or fees," National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri said here Saturday.
The drive, under the name `Operation Clean`, will be led by the National Police`s General Supervision Inspector, Com Gen Yusuf Manggabarani, Danuri said at the National Police Headquarters only two days after taking over the force`s top post from Gen Sutanto.
All provincial police chiefs are given three months` time to rid the police personnel and offices in their respective regions of all forms of illegal levies, failing which they will be replaced, he said.
"In three months` time as of Friday (Oct 10), there shall be no more illegal levies in the streets and police offices," Danuri said.
Operation Clean teams would visit the provinces in November and December 2008 to check the implementation of the drive by the regional police chiefs concerned.
"If there are still reports from the public about illegal levies or if police officers are caught red-handed committing the offense, don`t be surprised if firm action is taken," the former chief of the National Police`s Criminal Investigation Department said.
He said he and Manggabarani would also be any time accessible to members of the public who wanted to report illegal levy cases involving police officers.
A communication system was now being devised and set up whereby members of the public could send their reports to him or Manggabarani in person by cellular text messages (SMSs). The special telephoone numbers through which the public could lodge complaints would be announced next week.
